This semester I was a lousy teacher. Unorganized, chaotic, inconsistent, even incoherent. Of course, I am always like that. Those qualities are okay in a upper division class where you just have a Midterm and a Final, but in this type of class, it is not good. Okay, so next semester In Class Writing will be a major component of the course grade. I will not grade for quality on those, just quantity. Quizzes will be the same. Attendance problems will result in lower participation grade. 30% of the course will be a participation component. 6 absences are allowed, but missed quizzes, in class writing can not be made up. If students don't have a in class writing for an essay prompt, they will have to use a film or lyric assigned by me. Paper 1: Poetry Slam, Jeffrey McDaniel, Marvin Bell, Thomas Lux. Paper 2: Are These Lyrics Poetry? Paper 3: This Film is a Work of Art Paper 4: Is an Artist and meets the following criteria Stand the test of time Social-moral message Craft and Medium, process Subjective: Entertaining and/or engaging? We are not concerned whether it is good art or bad art. We may not like LEE GREENWOOD'S "God Bless The USA" but it might be around as long as Woody GUTHRIE's"This Land Is Your Land." What About Toby Keith? Or Porn? Policy on Tardiness: If you are late you distract class. So coming in while a quiz is in progress is too late to take the quiz. If you are more than 5 minutes late, I will mark you absent for a 50 minute class, and 10 minutes for a 75 minute class, and 15 for a 150 minute class. So be on time.
