English 102 Project 1 Choose one of the following options and write a 3-5 page, double-spaced essay on the subject matter. For each option you will want to summarize the text(s) and issues before delving into your argument. In the argument portion, you will want to remain cordial to your opposition while taking a definite stand. 1. Poetry Is War Read "Dulce Et Decorum Est" in (WA) and compare it with other war-themed poems such as W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming" and Stephen Crane's "War is Kind." (For the latter poems, look them up online) Argue the possibility that these poems relate to our current state of war since Gulf War II and 9/11, and if so, how? 2. Hip-Hop Summits: "The Revolution Not Televised" or "Don't Believe the Hype" Read "Money, Power, Elect: Where's the Hip-Hop Agenda?" and "The White Boy Shuffle" and compare these articles with each other and also with integrate observations from film, music and television. How does the arguments set forth in these articles affect your life? 3. To the Loudmouth, Goes the Spoils Watch a news program such as The O'Reilly Factor on Fox News Channel, Hard Ball on MSNBC, or Crossfire on CNN, and consider if a specific argument meets the following criteria of argument set forth in (WA): Argument is not a fight or a quarrel, argument is not pro-con debate, arguments require justifications of its claims, arguments combine truth seeking and persuasion. Why or why not does the show, on that particular day, constitute an argument?
