Point Breakdown for Assignment One

Thesis- The basis of the argument (5pts)

Supportive details- the underlying reasons behind each claim or sub-topic (5pts)

Proper use of language: grammar, punctuation, spelling (5pts)
Sophistication of language: Variety of words, phrases, choice, and usage (5pts)

Evidence (use of logos, ethos, pathos) to support details and thesis (5pts)

Citation- In text and parenthetical (10pts

Integration and proper use of quotations, paraphrases, summaries. (5pts)

Transitions through paragraphs, the effective use of paragraphs (5pts)

Organization and Cohesion: Does it stay on topic, and does it all make sense? (5pts)

Attention to audience, author, purpose (5pts)

Fairness to opposition, and to the standards of argumentation (5pts)

Conclusion (5pts)

4- very good, several flaws, meets criteria
3-satisfactory, lots of flaws, falls short of criteria
2- Below satisfactory, numerous flaws, does not meet criteria
1- Clearly failing, Severe problems, does not address criteria
0- failing, Not done

On categories of 10(ten pts), I will grade on the same scale- doubled, but I may adjust points, so it is possible to get a 9 or 7 out of 10 if I feel that it is somewhere in between.

Note: it is possible that one problem area can affect the rest of the grade, for example, a lack of MLA Bibliography and citation may be grounds for a failing grade for the paper.
