Extended Argument 102-50

Due Dates

Topic Proposal: 10/28 or your Conference

Library Day: November 4

Project 3:Annotated Bibliography and Prospectus: November 18

Rough Draft: 12/2

Project 4: Final Paper : 12/9

Presentation: 12/2 and 12/9

All of these components are required in order to receive full credit consideration for the projects.

Paper 3 is not a typical paper
It is a shorter, annotated bibliography and prospectus describing/previewing your paper.

You will have 10 citations related to your paper, and then you will provide brief summaries of each source and a statement explaining the usefulness of the source to your paper. The bibliography must be done MLA style, and the annotation will go underneath each source.

The prospectus will explain your interest in the topic, your plan for the paper and how you intend to address the audience what your purpose is. What Logos, Ethos and Pathos might you use?

Topic Proposal: We will do in class before the midterm. I will discuss your topics with you during your conference

Presentation: On December 2, and December 9 each student will get up and present/read their paper. Each of you will get 5 minutes to share your findings and a few minutes to answer any questions. You may be creative, although you should be concise and to the point. Audio/visual equipment can be ordered, but a Dvd player is not guaranteed.

Your bibliography will be 3 pages long, and your prospectus will be 1 1/2 to 2 pages long.

For both papers, you will get a letter grade based on the overall quality of the work. (A=100, A-+ 92, B+=89, B=85, B-=82, etc.)

Your final paper will be 8-10 pages long. You will want to argue about chosen topic using analysis to address opposition and support of your claim. You may want to use personal narrative to engage the reader. You will include a MLA bibliography and you will use citation in the text of your paper. After project 3, we will look at some sample papers and you will get more specific criteria for Project 4, but in the mean time, consult the sample MLA papers in WA and St Martin's Handbook.

Here is a sample annotation entry, You also must include a statement indicating why a source is useful for your paper.

Locke, David. Science as Writing. New Haven: Yale UP, 1992.
The principle argument of the chemist David Lockeés book is that "every scientific text must be read, that it is writing , not some privileged verbal shorthand that conveys a pure and unvarnished scientific truth" (ix). Within this text, he looks at the history of science writing and its development and through this examination problematizes the use of language in scientific discourse. His argument implies a need for critical attention to the rhetorical uses of language in scientific literature and the ways in which this language creates accepted knowledge.
