Humanistic Tradition Vol 6 Chinua Achebe- Things Fall Apart- Chinua Achebe On The Road- Jack Kerouac Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance- Robert Pirsig Electric Kool Aid Acid Test- Tom Wolfe The Bell Jar- Sylvia Plath This 8 week course will focus on the art and music of the 20th century examining some of the cultural influences that have shaped the United States and the world to our current day. This reading list deals primarily with the Cultural Revolution in the United States that unfolded in and around the Sixties, with the exception of Things Fall Apart which looks at the coming of the European to Africa, from an African perspective. This book in directly lays the groundwork for a global awareness. This issue is touched on to some degree or another in each book. What sense can we make of the world and the art and processes of art around us? What shapes our culture and made us who we are today? What sense can be made of the postmodern condition? We will survey Rock Music, Film, Books, Poem, Art, and other cultural touchstones of the 20th century and more in this class. Why take this class besides the fact that it fills a requirement? It doesn't teach you a skill other than the ability to name drop some artists at a cocktail party... This class is not a practical course in that way; however, humanities can teach you about human history and culture and give you insight into the psychological and social underpinnings of societies and individuals thereof, you might gain a deeper understanding of yourself, an awareness of other cultures and an exposure to other aspects of human civilization. what does it mean to be alive? Where do we get morals and spirituality and love and politics and communication and family? Do we base everything on a belief in the inerrancy of the Bible? If so, how does this course supplement your understanding in a human context rather than divine. Cultures have handed down information to us by memory and later by writing and in the 20th century, we saw a culmination of human events during the 1960s in the U.S.A. that were rather substantial. Not to say that the 60s is more important than any other era or that the USA is any more important than any other country (although it may be of more practical importance to us) I am leaving out works of other cultures because it would largely be impossible to cover the entire world in one class. Our two works that don't fit the 60s that much are Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart which also is our only non American work, and the Bell Jar, our sole book by a female author for this course, other than the editor of our illustrious textbook, The Humanistic Tradition. Sacred vs Secular, liberal vs conservative, protest vs propaganda, nationalist vs globalist, hippie vs square, gav vs straight, pro war vs anti war, 60-40, Johnson over Goldwater in 1964. 60-40 Reagan over Mondale in 1984. 51-48 Bush over Kerry in 2004. 54-46 Obama over McCain in 2008. Ann Coulter is a dead head, phish-head, and far right columnist and pundit, and also dated comedian Bill Maher. Woodstock Easy Rider 2001 Butch Cassady and the Sundance Kid Head The Wild Bunch My Fair Lady The Sound of Music Hair Jesus Christ Superstar Monterey Pops Smothers Brothers Dr Strangelove I Love You Alice B Toklas The Searchers Guess Whos coming to dinner The Lion in Winter The Producers To Sir With Love How To Succeed in Business without really trying Midnight Cowboy The Graduate Don't Look Back Breakfast at Tiffanys -- Not everything will be exactly in the 60s but it will be close enough in theme... also the entire history of humanities is at your disposal, and our textbook covers a lot of the 20th century and is almost like an encyclopedia. 60s rock: Music- Elvis Presley, Beatles Frank Zappa, John Cage Lou Reed Joni Mitchell Joan Baez Bob Dylan Chuck Berry Paul Simon The Who The Rolling stones the kinks John Cage Pete Seeger Amboy Dukes Johnny Cash Alice Cooper Cream Stevie Winwood Grateful Dead Jefferson Airplane The Doors The Stooges MC5 Linda Rondstadt Judy Collins Crosby Stills,Nash and Young Dusty Springfield 60s novels plays- poems- |
