Presentations- Each student will give 2 formal presentations. They can be solo or in groups. They should be elaborations on project subject matter. They may be different from subject matter.

electronic environment- submitted to turn it in on time=5%

Any group papers should be 3 pages minimum in length per student in group.

Rhetorical Knowledge

This category deals with contextual awareness, writing style and voice, effective communication skills and sometimes persuasion among other things.

An A paper in this category will demonstrate mastery in the preceding criteria. A B paper will demonstrate some strengths in each category, and a C paper will demonstrate at least a basic comprehension of these skills. A D will show deficits in 1 or more of those skills.

A Excellent
B Good
C Average, Satisfactory
D Below Average
F Failing

Critical Thinking Skills

An A will show mastery of critical thinking, reading and writing skills demonstrating full comprehension of subject matter, effectively demonstrating thinking in the writing that indicates higher understanding, and ability to perceive complexity and nuance, A B will demonstrate some strengths in the above criteria, and a C will show some basic, general understanding of the subject matter.
A D will demonstrate deficits

Conventions:

Grammar and punctuation are not the be all end all, but grammar errors distract the readers, show lack of professionalism.

Also, poor MLA Format will also detract from the grade. Follow the conventions here... you might be able to break them later on, but here they matter. MLA also includes works cited. Not having a work cited list and parenthetical citations can be ground for failure of the paper. (This is often, actually a form of plagiarism.)

1-3 errors- No penalty
4 errors+ 1/3 Letter grade penalty per error. There are somethings I overlook, and Turn It In occasionally mistakes errors that are not errors, but the egregious ones will not only cost you in your grade, but will also earn you frown emoticons :(

4: A-
5: B+
6: B
7:B-
8:C+
9:C
10:C- etc...

Other Convention errors:
Papers under minimum length: For every half page under 3 pages, the paper will lose a letter grade. It is better to overwrite than underwrite.

Conventions

A
B
C
D
F

Note: A paper that is earning an D/F in Conventions, Critical Thinking or Rhetoric can not earn a C, even if the other categories are A level.
The paper will earn a D+ at best, and will only be revisable to a C+.

Journals: 50 Pages, can be typed or written. Ten of the journal entries will be assigned in class, the other 50 pages is up to you. This can be a notebook, scrapbook, as long as it is related to this course. I will grade it based on quantity first, quality second. If it is 50 pages filled with serious effort, and or creative endeavour it will get an A If it is 40 pages-- B, 35 pages-- C 30 Pages D. The ten assigned entries will be posted on webcampus. There will be a list of optional prompts as well.

Keep the journal in class, take notes.... submit a thorough journal. It is worth about 2.5% of the course grade, but it is more important in the long run.

Note taking
creative generation
critical exploration
personal memento/ keepsake

I will peak at these monthly together in class, to give you informal progress reports.

FEEDBACK on Papers:

I tend to be sparse with feedback on papers. This is because of the sheer volume of papers to grade at any given time, a directive that we give less feedback as it can overwhelm the student. I do give more feedback if you are in danger of failing because of your writing. Please feel free to come visit me during office hours or by appt. if you have more questions. I recommend students visit the writing center as often as possible, and take the time to read everything in class including parts of the text I didn't assign, any thing I post on course content, and take the initiative and enroll in the writing center workshops.

Why can't I have an A?

an A is not given just because you work hard and are intelligent. Those traits will probably get you a B. An A goes beyond expectations in numerous ways, and is meant to be special. It is defined as Excellence. Excellence means superior and is a comparative term. Yes, there is a competitive aspect to the class. To get an A, you must demonstrate that you are above the pack. That does not mean that there can be only 1 A, or any. But you should be ready for a shock. You might have earned excellent marks in high school, but in college it is a different matter.

Personally, I see grading as a necessary evil, and would prefer that everyone give their best effort regardless of outcome. But the grades will help you know where you stand in relation to the subject. Hard work doesn't guarantee an A or even a B, but it does improve the chances.

Attendance: This is a 2 day a week class. If you are late or leave early, you will be marked down on class activity points. If you are absent, more than 4 times, you lose a letter grade, and more than 7, you fail the course. If you have an accceptable excuse that will excuse the absence in terms of failing the course, but not for the daily activity points. Take responsibility and ownership for your education. Be in class, accept the grade you deserve and don't be arrogant. Sure, you might be paying for this class, but what you put in is what you will get out of it.
