Thoughts on rewriting

Two questions to ask when you're stuck on a rewrite: What's missing? What's wrong?

What's missing?
Write these missing pieces without looking at the original draft. Then add in what you need, without trying to rewrite the original yet.

What's wrong?
Remove or reword what is now extraneous, unclear, boring, or otherwise poorly written.

I want to rewrite this story, but I get stymied by trying to revise it all at once. I have a hard time separating what needs revision from what is good. I'm hoping this method will help me get unstuck. It feels promising, anyway.
