The Muse Awakes!

As I mentioned in yesterday's entry, I finally managed to get a job interview. Today the arrangements were made, and I have all the directions and necessary information. The interview is tomorrow!

I'm feeling a mixture of excitement and terror at the prospect. I just hope it goes well, and that they think I'd be a good fit for the job. I'll also be meeting someone I used to work with, which should be nice (except he'll probably be the one asking all the technical questions at the interview!).

I thought my Muse was fast asleep. I really did. I simply couldn't make myself sit down and write, and it has been that way ever since getting back from Wiscon. That is not to say that I blame Wiscon, aside from the sleep deprivation the con entailed; if anything, I came away from it feeling more inspired than ever.

Anyway, I needed to go to bed early last night. We had to get up around 5:30 today so we could take one of the cars in for servicing. As you may have guessed, I didn't end up going to bed early because I was too busy writing :)

I stayed up until around 11, reading the first few stories in Tim Pratt's Little Gods (very good so far), and then I went off to bed. I tried to get to sleep, but I couldn't! There was this pesky story idea, you see.

Apparently my brain had decided it was the perfect time to ruminate on story ideas. This one came about from one of the crit group's Weekly Words from a few weeks back. I'd been trying to come up with an idea for this obscure word (Hi, Lon!) for weeks.

Once the idea began to take shape, I then had the opening sentences running through my head. I tried to ignore it all and go back to sleep, but my brain was very insistent that I get up and write it all down.

Seven notebook pages and an hour later, I had the first part of the story written! I wrote enough that I've reached the pivotal scene, and from there it should be a smooth cruise to the finish. Of course after saying that, I'll probably struggle to put down every word.

This morning I recalled what 3 hours of sleep felt like, and I was not amused. After we dropped the car off, Carrie took me back to the apartment and she went to work. I checked my email and my usual sites, and had a nap for 1.5 hours. I still feel a bit groggy, but a bit more awake than I did before.

I'd love to dive in and finish the story today, but I need to do some last minute interview preparation and get to bed early for the interview tomorrow morning. With a bit of luck, I can finish it off later on tomorrow or Saturday.

The Muse works in mysterious ways...
