Breakfast and some movies

The weekend was pretty relaxing, overall. We watched some movies, went out to breakfast, and spent far too much time looking at Halloween crap in various stores. I also had a nice long chat with my injured mate and my parents in Australia.

On the writing front, I gave the story one last bit of spit n' polish and finished the final version. That one won't get sent out immediately, since I have other plans for it. The wheels are in motion.... I also sent out another story that had boomeranged back last week.

The first thing we watched was Fahrenheit 9/11, which I thought was a particularly well made documentary, even if it did seem a little like propaganda at times. Michael Moore certainly knows how to stir emotions. I'd be very surprised if anyone could sit for the duration of the documentary without feeling strongly one way or the other. It builds a good case against the current administration and the US media, and there's no doubt that it'll change a lot of minds come election time!

To lighten the mood, we watched the third Evil Dead movie, Army of Darkness. This was more like an action/adventure comedy than horror. The effects have dated terribly, which had the unintended (?) side-effect of making me laugh even harder at the silliness of it all. This movie has the works: an absurd plot, corny one-liners, over-the-top (but not too gorey) violence, and Bruce Campbell. Honestly, what more could you ask for? ;) I liked it, but don't go in expecting a creepy horror movie, or uncanny realism (how many rounds does a shotgun hold, you ask?).

Tonight I finally finished reading issue #14 of Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet. There's some good stuff in here, including a bizarre and eye-straining piece by David J. Schwartz, entitled A NOtE AbOUt thE TYpE. Oddly enough it makes a twisted sort of sense if you can get through it to the end without crossed eyes! My other favourites this issue include Two Stories by James Sallis (Telling Lives was the best of the two, IMHO), Felix Soutré, Puppeteer: an abandoned article by Matthew Latkiewicz (non-fiction indeed! It even has references!), and Projection by Christoph Meyer.
