Music for a Tuesday

Music.

Rebecca

For me, music means life and life means music.

This is not to say I am an expert on any kind of music, or that I am currently able to play an instrument, though I sure wish I could play piano. I did play guitar when I was younger, when I had built up calluses on my fingers and could manage those cutting steel strings on my old guitar (not the one pictured above; that one above was my first ever guitar that I learned to play on, but the one I sold Bill was a much better steel-string guitar that I had for many years after that first one.) I saved that guitar for years and years after I stopped playing it. Then I thought it should go to someone who would use it and enjoy it more than I, and I sold it to my ex-husband, Bill, for $50. Heh. I don't know its monetary worth, but it was certainly a lot more than $50, but I was happy to send it off to a good home.

I went through phases of music-love. In the '50s, I loved the do-wop songs, dancing with boys "close" after school, playing Pat Boone records (oh gosh, I saw him the other day on TV doing some advertisement - he's OLD!), and all the rest from the 50s. In the 60s I was late getting to The Beatles, although I did make it there, but I was a child of the Folk Music generation and played folk music in my church (we had folk music services) and at hootenannies, up on a stage, and I don't know how I had the nerve to do that.

My Nana, who lived upstairs in our house...

...in a converted attic-turned-cozy-apartment, was into the folk music along with us, and for hours we would congregate in her living room and play Chad Mitchell Trio and Peter Paul and Mary and Johnny Cash (Nana's favorite) and John Denver and all of them from the 60s. We went to see Chad Mitchell perform locally at a high school and went backstage to meet him. I was in love with him at that point. John Denver took over his role in "The Mitchell Trio" and that's how I came to love his music.

Chad Mitchell Trio sings "I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound."

And the John Denver song that always gets me crying, from his Christmas with the Muppets, "The Christmas Wish" song,

"It's in every one of us, to be wise.
Find your heart, open up both your eyes.
We can all know everything, without ever knowing why...
It's in every one of us, by and bye."

Anyway, I play music here every day, and I have so many different kinds of music that no matter what mood I'm in, there is a CD that will either get me out of a funk or, as I sometimes like to do, sink deeper into a funk. Sometimes I get feeling low but being pulled up from it is not what I want, so there is music that fills the house that whirls me around in its magic spell.

For some reason I am in a funk like that today, and the perfect song for it is

Damien Rice singing "The Blower's Daughter" from the movie "Closer."

Oh yeah. I'm really loving Damien right about now. This whole album "O" is fabulous. I know most people may not buy whole albums anymore, just download one song, but not I. I buy albums. I want it all not just one.

Somedays it's classical music filling the rooms here. I especially love cello music, specifically Jackie Du Pre. Oh heavens - I love her music.

Has anyone seen the movie Hilary and Jackie? Or is it Jackie and Hilary? Whatever, her sister was Hilary and she was Jackie Du Pre, probably one of the most famous and fabulous cello players in the history of the universe.

Oh I'm in heaven after listening to this. Her husband, Daniel Barenboim, is conducting. What a talent, what a couple! I have this on CD, the Elgar Concerto.

In fact, when the Damien Rice CD I am playing is done, I am going to put Jackie on the Bose and sit back and enjoy that for a while.

I've vacuumed the first floor level, I am making a bread for Paul in the machine, and that's about it for me today for work. I need a musical intervention, turned up to at least 45, intensifying this funky mood I'm in.

("I can't take my eyes off of you...I can't take my mind....")

Cheers,

Bex
