After dealing with numerous health issues, he announced his retirement and the Foundation honored him with a small but appreciative gathering of staff and their families. The dinner was very nice and we were able to express our appreciation for his work and our wishes for a good retirement.
Though his health had been poor, he seemed to be in a "holding pattern," as aviators like to say, and was looking forward to spending time with his wife and their family. Last night, Vice Admiral Fetterman passed away at his home, surrounded by family and friends. I received the news this morning from my immediate superior. I can't help but feel sad and shocked at the news. Though we knew he was in ill health, no one knew that in one week's time, he would be gone. One week of retirement. One lifetime of service. Right now, my thoughts and prayers are with Nancy and the rest of their family. Though they are proud of the work he accomplished, I can only imagine the sorrow they must feel at being unable to enjoy the golden years together. God Bless and Keep You, Admiral Fetterman.
