Thank you for noticing because it did take quite a bit of preplanning. Luckily, I didn't have to design and set up the geocache myself. We used a five part one a friend had set up in our neighborhood. It took us from the Tibetan Monastery (bet you don't have one of those in your neighborhood) to the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Center (a tutoring center), the chocolate shop, the library, and finally to the hidden geocache.
John and I both did the route beforehand, and I found treats for each stop. The kids and I went shopping at the local Tibetan goods shop (bet you don't have one of those in your neighborhood), and we picked out incense for the goody bag. After I bought it, the store owner said, "Thank you for joining the struggle." The kids got a geopolitical lesson as an added bonus. I also had bouncy balls with stars in them for our trip to Mars, chocolate hearts from the chocolate store, and the librarian gave us all a library sticker. A unique goody bag. The kids went out in three groups with a grown-up in each one. With a three/four to one ratio, everyone got a chance to hold the iphone, a compass, and the clue sheet. Oh, did I mention they had to make a code and then solve a puzzle using the code? For instance, at the monastery, they had to count how many prayer wheels there were outside. Those numbers--64--became A and B respectively. It wasn't hard and added more fun to the adventure. Thank goodness it wasn't hot. It's been 90 degrees lately. But yesterday, it was in the 70's. We had a sandwich buffet for lunch where the marshmallow fluff was the biggest hit. John made a lovely cake, and Rose appreciated all her gifts. Happy double digits Rose!
