the chore chart

I can't remember if I blogged about this before. Last year the kids wanted to do a chore chart--like they do in school. So, we all agreed on a list of chores and did them for one day. Then we dropped it.

When I say we all agreed, John wasn't too excited. I'm guessing he thought leaving the kids in charge of sweeping or wiping the table was going to actually make more work for him.

I know I blogged over the summer about my wanting to not raise spoiled brats and to start Rose taking on more responsibility--the laundry, the stove, the dishes. . . She gave me some push back, and I backed off a bit. But, I was not done trying to save my children from rotten spoilage, oh no, not done. So, John and I revisited the chore chart concept, and then the family revisited it. And we have done our chores for four days now!

Really, it's working. No one is whining. No one is saying it's not fair or necessary. It helps that the chores take three minutes to do, and we all do them directly after dinner. The chores are:

plant care/tuck the cushions back into the couch
tidy 10 items in the livingroom and 10 in the diningroom
sweep
inspector (!)

Personally, I don't care about plant care, but Rose does. I think she finds it a relief to share that job. Maybe we should all get stickers and a prize for getting our chores done.
