Every day, my buddy Andy & I have either one of two things to say to our co-worker Vickie regarding her precious Yankees the night before:
1. When they lose: "How'd the Yankees do yesterday?" 2. When they win: "[sigh] Well Vickie, apparently God cannot be everywhere at the same time, as most people believe..." (Yesterday God was not in Arlington, TX, apparently) Which brings me to my point: The idea of God is not stupid. But people sure can be dumb when it comes to God. I guess today I'll put it in the context of religion and homopho-sorry, homosexuality. Today is not a good day to be gay. First, there was this And then this just came out...no pun intended. Ouch! Talk about your 1-2 punch. OK, ok - I'll back up a bit. Clearly cheating on your wife is wrong...but it's hard to say if NJ Gov. James E. McGreevey would be stepping down, or getting the same press blitz, if he was screwing another woman instead of a man. I mean, there's definitely a stigma there, right? I don't believe homophobia's any kind of natural instinct. I don't have an instinct to have sex with a guy, but I also don't have an instinct to flee in terror from men who do. (And yes, that's the kind of hard-hitting journalism I plan to bring with me to Northwestern next month.) Homophobia, as far as I see it, is primarily based in culture and tradition - religious culture and tradition. Take this gem of a website my buddy Alvaro forwarded to me this morning. I was already walking into work contemplating a bumper sticker I noticed on my commute that read "Soy creacion, no evolucion!" and wondering how people in this day and age can still be so ignorant, then, by total coincidence, the first thing I see is this website from my Inbox. Jesus Christ! I think the jury's still out on organized religion. What else has the power to enrich so many people's lives in such a positive, meaningful way - and then cancel all that out with bigotry and oh, I don't know, a little holy war and genocide here and there? Talk about your 0-sum gain. People on both the pro or the con sides of organized religion have equally plausible arguments, leaving me still scratching my head. Look, my point is: We need to rename Dodger Stadium the Paul LoDuca Memorial Ballpark. Who would disagree with this. In other news, THE ANTS ARE COMING, THE ANTS ARE COMING! FUCKING RUN!!
