Some Bad News From The Vet

I got a call back from Sydney's vet yesterday regarding the blood work up. She didn't like the numbers for his kidneys and she said that it looks like they're just starting to have problems. On the bright side, we're catching this pretty much as it starts. On the not-so-bright side, Sydney is my baby and I can't bear to think of something being wrong with him. She wants me to bring him in sometime in the month so that they can collect a urine sample from him. This should let them know what treatment we need to do at this point. At the very least, he'll be on some sort of a prescription diet. They don't know if it's medication time or not.

So, I'm worried over Sydney. Hopefully catching this early means we can treat it with food and possibly meds and that he can still live a good long time. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to him. I've had him since my senior year in college and I'd be lost without him. The fact that Byron (Kat's cat in college and "furbrother" to Sydney when we were roomies) recently died of kidney failure only makes me worry more.

As if I wasn't getting enough of my daily dose of bad news yesterday, we also got a letter on our door letting us know to not drink the water. Apparently, some recent testing found out that there's too much lead in it. I wonder if this has anything to do with Sydney's problem.

This weekend we're going to look into getting one of those Pur water filters for our kitchen sink (if they also filter out lead) so that I can continue to use the water to drink (with Crystal Light or Kool Aid) and so that Sydney can safely drink it as well.

Keep your fingers crossed for my Sydney that this will turn out all right in the end. I'm just glad we caught it as it's starting to be a problem! I really like this vet and I now see why she recommends a check up and blood work done every 6 months for senior cats.
