I got the call back from the vet yesterday on Sydney's blood work. For the most part, it was good news. The last time Sydney had his check up (around six months ago) she noticed that he was starting to have kidney failure. Apparently the highest number you want to see in kidney bloodwork for a cat is a 35. Previously he's tested at 39 and at 40. So, we put him on the prescription k/d diet to start and we were going to hold off on medication until it got worse. K/d is supposed to slow the progression of kidney disease. In Sydney, it seems to have done more than that.

As of this blood test, he's back in the normal zone! His number was 30. So not only does the k/d seem to be working for it's intended purpose, but it also seemed to have turned things around for him as well. Sydney will be 15 this May and it seems that he's a healthy kitty. We'll be keeping him on the k/d diet and he'll be getting another blood test at his next 6 month wellness visit.

The only problem that she saw was that his potassium was below normal. While that in itself isn't something horrible, low potassium can cause other problems (and worsen any existing kidney conditions). So, we're going to put him on a potassium supplement for now. I'll be picking that up on Saturday morning.

Heh, wish I could give him some of my potassium, I usually test too high (which is also bad).

For a 14 year old cat, being on k/d and having to take a potassium supplement isn't too bad.
