I'm not an activist by any means--I'm a reporter for chrissake. But I'm a human first. And I wouldn't be a human if it weren't for the docs at Bellevue Woman's Hospital here in Upstate New York who brought me into this world.
And now the state's commission says the only hospital in the state healing and caring specifically for women, has to close its doors. A commission of 54 men and 34 women say it's because the state needs to save money on health care costs. A hospital that has delivered 10 million babies in 75 years. The first in the nation to import the once controversial mammography x-ray machine from France. And the hospital that I was really hoping would deliver my own children someday. Hospitals generally give me the creeps--but you walk into Bellevue and it's like you're in your own living room. There's a fireplace and couches and paintings and a warm feel. All the focus is on you. You have conversations about your health care like you're talking about relaxing, fun things. When I go there for blood tests, I'm like, hey, I don't mind that you're sticking a big, scary needle into my arm--I feel right at home. And it's the simple fact that women have different health care needs than men! In fact, the needs are vastly different. Come on, it's a not-for-profit hospital. It would be a tragedy to lose it!
