Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Sunburn, frostbite and the things in the middle

My forehead is flaking from SoCal convertible sunburn as I pack extra warm socks and sweaters for my o-dark flight to Buffalo.
It will be another two weeks before this series of trips is complete and life can return to a semblance of order.
I'm just not sure what that order will be.
Many things are changing and it appears they will continue to change. We knew we would leave this place eventually when my job disappeared, but now that the day approaches there are so many doubts about where to go next.
These trips can be considered scouting missions, or simply a diversion to avoid a complicated decision. Jobs and children have provided guideposts for all of my adult life. But one daughter is talking about moving out West and the other isn't talking at all. Charlie is ready to really retire and I can write from anywhere.
It would seem that there would be many possibilities.
But he hates the cold. I melt in heat. The compromise locations are just that... settle-for solutions. I want a city with a real airport. He wants someplace peaceful with water or mountains.
First it was various Florida possibilities, then Asheville, last night there was brief discussion on the Baja Peninsula as ex-pats.
The geographic isolation, cultural deficit, cost of living and brutal gnats make staying here impossible, but there is no clear picture of what comes next.
So it's New York tomorrow, DC on Monday, Fort Lauderdale on Thursday and Orlando next Monday. Someday someplace something is going to work. And I won't find it sitting here.
