I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. That's my window on the world

I write in front of two large upstairs windows, each divided into eight panes.
For the first few miserable months of this book, the first six upper panes were reserved for Post-It Super Stickies (TM) about each of the six major characters in the work in progress.
Being able to look up and be instantly reminded of their birthdates, key relationships and physical characteristics was meant to keep me on track. I spent a lot of time looking past them to the birds outside.
The last few weeks have been fits and starts. Smooth sailing followed immediately by an abrupt crash. Chapter Four, narrator three was determined to make me a confirmed bird watcher.
She of the third pane and I tried again this morning and there she was in all her obnoxious glory. For lack of the right word for the drama of the moment, it clicked.
I pulled out the loose plot chart and the Marble Composition book filled with bits of dialogue and future events I have been collecting for this project for almost a year.
Within two hours I had covered the remaining panes with blue stickies representing the last 10 chapters of the book. When I ran out of blue, I took a lunch break and bought yellow ones at the store... opening them up to scribble more ideas on the way home.
What I see in front of me now is scribbled chaos to anyone else, for me it's a magnificent order.
My Catholic upbringing makes me want to light incense and candles at the altar.
I can't see much anymore. But I love the view.
