Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. It's a groveling month

I made my pilgrammage to Lily Dale (America's first and only surviving spiritualist colony) in Western New York back in August.
I had a bizarre, inexplicably wonderful experience there a few years ago and have returned to be disapointed several times since.
The last time was the worst. I was told in a public "message meeting" that big changes were coming in October and that if, and only if, I was willing to swallow my pride and grovel, good things would happen by November.
Gee, thanks.
Everybody else was getting "you work too hard and the spirits want you to know you are loved and appreciated."
Apparently they were better tuned in to the vagaries of Homeland Security than most of the government and all of the media. The yet unreported story of the obliteration of Immigration and Customs Enforcement training has certainly delivered "big changes" to our house.
I realized this morning that the grovelling started yesterday. First on the phone with American Express and then in a series of cover letters on resumes to Buffalo.
At about 2 a.m., an inspiration for a short-term local project hit me and I spent the remaining dark hours writing and rewriting the proposal looking for the right mix of professionalism, value and maybe just a little sympathy. The bizarre thing is, its a damn good idea.
The writing on my novel has a new urgency and excitement. It's going to get finished. The more possibility balls I throw in the air, the more likely one will get caught.
I was putting stamps on the local project proposal when it dawned on me that this is October and I am grovelling.
But I hope I'm doing it with style.
November is right around the corner.
