I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. The worst hotel in New Jersey

When you spend $100 for a hotel room I think it's reasonable to expect cable, maybe a remote control, basic cleanliness and a door that closes tight. Parking is on the street among boarded up buildings and contruction sites.
One of the locks on the door barely seals, the other three don't function at all. Pieces of the bath drain on sitting on the back of the toilet and the credit card-sized bar of soap crumbled when I opened it. There's a hole in the center of the better bedspread and the ripple of the carpet seems to be evidence of a fifth floor flood.
Welcome to the "luxurious" Berkeley Carteret Hotel in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
It's the only hotel in any kind of range of the Stone Pony where I've had a ticket for tonight's show for months.
Not exactly what I had in mind for my long-anticipated pilgrammage to Bruceland.
But it's been just that kind of trip.
A job interview with huge expectations have turned out to be horrendous. Long shots and "just visits" are developing into what could be dream professional challenges.
I'm extending the trip in anticipation of good things in the coming week... secure in the knowlege that at least the accommodations, and likely much more, will get better as the week goes on.
