Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Spring fever

Yesterday pretended to be spring and folks here did all they could to encourage the masquerade.
As I hauled my laundry from the car to the laundromat, the sidewalks on Elmwood were alive with strollers, dogs on leash and chess games outside the coffeeshop. One defiant merchant places potted daffodils in the windowboxes of her shop windows. In the laundromat, a couple debated saving the dryer quarters to buy a clothesline.
The forecast for the night was freezing rain and the massive, grey mountains of gravel, sand and ice still rim every parking lot, but there wasn't a hat or glove in sight in silent protest of reality.
It feels like a change is just around the corner. While the weather has been mild (for Buffalo), this winter has been the longest and darkest in my years.
There is no clear evidence that things will get better anytime soon. The house is still on the market. My employment forecast is cloudy at best.
But it just feels like something has to break. Hope over experience says it will be good.
