Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Toe-ing the line

There are eight million forty six nerve endings in your right middle toe. I know this for a fact because every one of them is individually electrically charged at this moment.
A compound fracture and laceration of the toe is apparently not a common scrapbooking injury. But I'm no common scrapper.
I've been napping and vegging since I got back from the ER adventure. Considering nothing in my apartment is more than two hops away and I wasn't doing much moving anyway, I zipped off my velcro Frankenstein boot and discovered that reality television isn't all that bad with pain meds.
From that reclining Nirvana, it seemed quite possible that I could go to work tomorrow. Maybe even run a marathon next week. I wondered if perhaps Ripley tracked the fastest healing toe.
I was thinking about calling Letterman's bookers about this quirky Buffalo broad with amazing regenerative powers as I swung my legs to the side of the bed to change my clothing. My until-that-point-harmless gymshorts viciously grabbed my hapless toe as I took them off.
The skyrockets were almost as bright as when I brought the sharp metal chairleg and my full weight down on my toes last night.
Friends and relatives have been calling and checking in all day. Cheryl got right to the point.
Yes, it bled a lot.
But no, I didn't get any on the scrap pages.
Some people are not meant to live alone.
I am likely one of them.
