Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. A chopped up mansion

I'm moving into a beautiful old mansion.
OK, it's actually the front room of a mansion that is more old than beautiful. And the room is subdivided with drywall to create a kitchenette, a bathette and a bedroomette.
The oxymoronic living room is too long and narrow to accomodate even a love seat, but it does have an awesome old hearth and a beautiful fireplace.
The focal point of the space is a lovely (walled in) archway separating me from my neighbor-to-be. But the best part is a grand porch larger than the actual apartment. I immediately saw Charlie sitting outside with a cigar on his next visit and me pecking away on my lap top while enjoying summer breezes.
The landlord of the hovel set things up for me to be able to move here. He bent a few rules and did me a favor with no obvious return to him. People in Buffalo are like that.
No, it's not the trendy downtown loft or the summer cottage I've been dreaming about for two years now... and it's not home yet... but it's getting there.
