Buffalo Gal

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. HIgh ceilings and ice cubes

Remember Mary Tyler Moore's adorable bachelorette efficiency?
This isn't it. Not even close.
But it is such a far cry from the prison cell-like existence of the last four months it may as well be the penthouse of the Trump Tower.
It has a fireplace, a porch, an open Wi-Fi connection, wood floors that were once beautiful and crown moldings that were probably pretty detailed about 40 coats of paint ago.
But most of all, it has high ceilings. I no longer feel I am entering a daily MRI when I cross the threshhold into my own (temporary) home.
After months of a thigh high refrigerator built for six-packs and other collegiate stash, I have an adult ice box -- with a freezer. My first purchase today was ice cube trays. I went through a Buffalo winter without access to ice cubes (insert irony). When I broke my toes, I used sorta cold Lean Cuisines from the four inch compartment at the top of the mini-fridge. They did not work well.
The one erratic electric burner coil with a noxious odor has been replaced by a gas stove with an oven and four burners. For the 24 years of my adult life I took appliances for granted. Never again. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the broiler.
This place is at least 100 years old. The original outdoor light fixtures are gas and I counted at least six functioning chimneys on the roof. There have been thousands of stories and secrets under this roof.
I can't wait to see how mine unfolds.
