I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Time to call a meeting

The Boss says "it's a long life in a small town," but the days fly by. It seems I no sooner rush from the elevator to the office door (I have a time management problem particular to the hours between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.), that I see the parade of people in coats going by my door.
I end up staying a little later, not because of pressure, but I want to finish what I'm working on.
It's a really good feeling.
Charlie and I have fallen into the habit of grocery shopping together and planning meals that we like or think we might like (as the daughters who used to call the shots make independent choices in other states). Something is usually on the stove or in the oven when I walk in. The other day I jokingly asked him to meet me at the door with a martini -- and have to admit it was fun when he did. In fact, a lot of things are fun these days.
Finances are still a shoehorn, but we're learning how to live with the fit.
If the weather holds this weekend, we're going to drive to Letchworth State Park to see fall color, our only other commitment is for Connor's championship football game.
Following a couple years of chaos, these new rhythms fit nicely.
I'm running out of excuses to not be writing. The first book poured out as if the dam broke. This one has just been a damn challenge.
But it seems to be creeping in with the fall chill.
The characters and relationships have been mapped out in composition books for over a year now. Their story is set in Western New York and I'm starting to see them react in my daily experiences. Everyone I meet inadvertantly tells me something about a character or plot point of which they actually know nothing.
Charlie is playing poker tonight. It's time to call a meeting of the characters.
Let's see who shows up.
