Buffalo Gal
Judi Griggs

I'm a communications professional, writer, cynic, mother, wife and royal pain. The order depends on the day. I returned to my hometown in November 2004 after a couple of decades of heat and hurricanes. I can polish pristine copy, but not here. This is my morning exercise -- 20-minute takes without a net or spellcheck. It's easier than sit ups for me. No guarantee what it will be for you. Coordinating coats

Moscow is having a record warm winter, but there was a frigid state of emergency on the beaches of California. Generally moderate St. Louis is without power for the third time this season.
The calendar and weatherman have been in conflict for many months now.
In Buffalo we've been under unrealized storm warnings for the last few days because it won't stay cold enough for the freezing rain to stay that way.
Budding plants are as perplexed as the rest of us. Saturday afternoon we discovered houseflies... in Buffalo... in January.
We may be confused, but the dog knows just what to do -- shed, shed and shed some more.
She may be a well-bred Yellow Lab of champion pedigree, but anywhere near my black winter coat she is simply a white-haired hound ( and an exceptionally hairy one at that). Forget dust bunnies, I've got fur puppies that muster daily in the corners of each of the 17 steps between the upstairs and downstairs in our house.
No longer need I feel guilty for the big sad brown eyes and wet nose pressed against the glass every morning when I leave for work - Lily now goes everywhere with me and my wardrobe.
There's a lint brush in the car and another at my desk, but apparently they work much better on lint. I attack my coat and slacks with masses of masking tape and usually get about half of the furry inventory before I give up.
We went shopping for a coat the other day with the expressed purpose of finding a new coat to match the dog. The post-Christmas sales were completely picked over for beige and white - and I would have gladly settled for ecru.
But apparently Yellow Labs are ever more popular than I thought.
There was a gorgeous, cashmere (blend), elegantly styled knee length coat at 60 percent off - and I had a coupon for another 20 percent. Considering the cut, fit, price and quality, I bought another black coat.
Storing it in the car will both inspire me to find parking spaces closer to the house and keep me from dallying between the house and car.
Global warming or cosmic joke, I'll be delighted when this "winter" is over.
