Just a quick update. Then onto the review! We're on the last week of the show (4 more performances)and have been selling out every show. This past friday and saturday, there were actually some people sitting in the aisles, as well as standing in the back, which I'm sure made the fire department really happy. Mom loved the show (both times she saw it). Hopefully she'll do a review on this journal. So, I saw the movie musical "Chicago" this past weekend, finally. Now everyone can stop bugging me about going to see it. Anyway, the directing was brilliant. I absolutely loved the cinematography...it's was a well told story. Richard Gere left a lot to be desired. Ofcourse a few years ago, Derek (the boyfriend) and I saw the musical which we were both floored. I think he liked the part best when one of the dancers slid down a ramp. After I slapped him upside the head, we enjoyed the rest of it together. We saw it with Sandy Duncan as Roxie who should stick to TV. It's not usually the leads that make these musicals or movies. It's the dancers and / or supporting actors that set the period and "die with dignity" in telling it. I loved in the movie how they gave more of a story to the supporting characters which gave the main plot a complementary subplot. If that makes any sense. This was a nice ensemble piece and I found it much more interesting than than bits between Roxie Hart and Billy (Renee Z. and Richard G, respectively). A note on the 4 leads: I was not impressed (as you might have guessed) one bit by Richard Gere, nor by Renee Zellweger (whose work I've really admired in the past). Queen Latifah (ugh spelling. whatever...it's queen latifah) was a complete joke. She couldn't have made more of a cliche. However, I was amazed by Catherine Zeta Jones. Her vocal and physical energy / presence (on screen - no less) was mesmerizing. I give this film 3 1/2 stars with a big round of applause to the dancers and I encourage everyone to see the stage-play...just try to miss it with Sandy Duncan! :) Feel free to share your experience of the movie or stage-play "Chicago". Would love to hear what others thought!
