MUSICIANS TAKIN' OVER BROADWAY..OR OFF-BROADWAY...

Opening night...it was exciting! I was in the third row. Not normally wanting to sit so close, but it was the best seat in the house!!!

THE FACTS:
"People are Wrong" opened this past friday the 22nd at the Vineyard Theater here in NY. It was two hours of complete ROCK! Written by Robin Goldwasser, John Flansburgh's (They Might Be Giants) wife, and Julia Greenberg.

THE STORY (in a nutshell):
Sorry folks, the cliche is that I immediately thought of "Rocky Horror". Except that it takes place on a farm! Okay, but other than this...I was engaged for the full two hours. Which is hard to do for me...an extreme compliment. The story is about this young couple from the City that move out to the 'burbs and when they get there they discover that everyone in this small town is a part of a "cult".

HERE'S MY PROBLEM:
I say this with a lot of hesitation because I love John Flansburgh...but I don't understand how he fit into the story. The music and well, the story supported the lives and happenings of the people on this farm. John Flansburgh and Erin Hill's characters seemed to be cake. They weren't really needed. There wasn't any life or death matter with them trying to survive on this farm. I know the cult takes advantage of them in any way they can, but the main relationship which was very interesting was the one between David Driver and Robin Goldwasser. I would have loved to see that grow even more. Then, in the end...David Driver's character finds his journey which again was beautifully done, but we don't know what happens to John and Erin. A serious writing faux pah ( I never said I was a good speller)!

These shows fascinate me that are not the normal broadway piece. Movin' Out being another. Rent set this standard of bringing in Rock musicians rather than actors to tell the story. "People are Wrong" did the same. The entire cast is made up of musicians. What really interested me is the level of acting all around was so much greater than a lot of theater or musicals for that matter that I've seen lately. I don't mean different...I mean better...by miles.

FINAL NOTES:
The music was awesome. The story was a great concept, just not tight enough...giving the two "leads" weak characters to work with. David Driver is gorgeous and if he's not gay and reads this...email me. :)
