Remnants of Frances/The Red Cross

Submissions for Issue #2 of Chick Flicks Ezine open now through September 15!

Chick Flicks: an ezine that fills the void in publishing. We're looking for stories and essays that are moody, dark, real, gritty. You don't have to be a woman to submit to Chick Flicks, nor does your main character need to be a woman. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us hurt in the deepest, darkest parts of our souls. But most of all, be honest, raw, real. We prefer pieces of 1000 words or less, but we will consider longer works if queried first.

Click below for full submission guidelines and schedule. Subs open until Sept 15.

Chick Flicks

*********

well it's a rainy day here in the peidmont of north carolina. originally, frances was supposed to just skirt the mountains, causing some flooding. but i guess like when the moon, stars and planets align in an astrological reading, the highs and lows from all directions have aligned to bring us frances' leftovers.

i saw on the news the other day, pleadings by the red cross. people in our area were calling to see about donating food, clothes and water. the red cross asked people please not to donate these items, but instead, send money.

what? so those people aren't going to need food, clothes and water?

i have a problem with the red cross but only because of a story my mother told me years ago.

our cousins lived in tordado alley, specifically right smack dab in the middle of witchita falls. in the seventies, a tornado came through destroying the town. the red cross promptly swooped in, handing out blankets, donuts, coffee and a few needed supplies, like water.

several months after the tornado, when our cousins were just getting their lives back together, the red cross sent them a bill.

they did what? you mean the red cross is not the "charity" it says it is? i mean, that's pretty low to send a bill after someone has lost everything.

i'm wondering, can anyone confirm or dispell that this is how the red cross operates?
