2008-01-09 9:32 AM about the gravestones i mentioned before (i think i did) as z and i were walking back from the office the first day we arrived, we came across these two gravestones (in the pic above). they are probably less than twenty feet from the road.
curious, we walked up to them, but one was completely "blank" the other, the name was not legible, but the dates read 1842-1870. time had taken a toll on them both. so today, i went up the office to pay my electric bill. i happened to ask they lady if she knew anything about them. she says, "they're from the civil war" "really? but no one knows who they are?" "no, but those are the only two remaining. that's the reason why that area is empty, it's a civil war graveyard." so under the Spanish moss, probably mostly, confederate soldiers were laid to rest. i cut through that area the other day, having no idea i was walking over unmarked graves. and i am fascinated. looks like i'll be finding the local historical society and doing some research. my dad will find this most interesting.
