The Law Comes Home with Me

I brought legal work home for the first time this evening, and I'll be drafting a mechanic's lien later tonight. For anyone who doesn't know what a mechanic's lien is, it's a weird combination of constitutional right (read Texas constitution, a document that fills whole volumes because the Texas legislature loves to enact laws they can call constitutional) and statutory right that construction contractors and subcontractors (as well as lots of other trade professionals) can use to get money they're owed for work completed. The liens attach to whatever property was worked on by the tradesman or tradeswoman, and, generally, they can only be removed if the debt is paid off. However, the lien has to be filed timely and correctly, and getting a mechanic's lien done right is a real challenge. So, that's my task of the evening.

As you can imagine, I think this will be the only writing I get done tonight.

Well, I'm off to have a little desert and then get cracking on my lien drafting process.
