2005-10-30 1:08 PM From Dallas Fort Worth International Airport It happened again...
My row partner...Anna. Anna is a single mother. Her father is in his 80's, has a house in the 9th ward. She was in NO, down from Minneapolis where, with 9 family members, she moved into her sister's home. She had to come down because her landlord was evicting her formally so that renovations can begin on the home she was renting. She will not be able to afford the house when it is repaired, as rentals have tripled in her area....$2500 a month for the three bedroom she has lived in for under $900 a month for years... Her father is basically screwed. He did not have flood insurance, fixed income folks in the 9th Ward mostly couldn't afford it. The house must be demolished, but the land likely won't support even a reverse mortgage to rebuild...It was interesting to hear her view that whoever owns the barge that hit the levee should have to rebuild their house...Also...those emergency SBA loans that are supposed to help people rebuild? If you are on Soc.Sec., you can't qualify..the income requirements are MUCH higher. So what are they to do... All I could do was listen...
