We got home late last night. The trip was great. We started out later than I wanted, but with four kids to herd into the car, I think we did pretty good. We played Angela's Christmas cd of Disney's Alladin for the first leg of the road.

Made it to Morro Bay at about 3 PM. Kids and I went to the beach next to Morro Rock. I brought the nunchucks with me. Angela and I did karate while Michael and Danielle played in the surf and Michael wrote I heart Danielle in the sand. It was so beautiful and doing nunchucks as the sun set was a perfect moment. Joe stayed at the hotel, but he was doing pretty good and went to dinner with us. We stuff ourselves with fish and sang too loud, laughed too loud, and told scary stories about the first house we rented after the divorce. Not for the first time, we joined hands and thanked each other for getting through that horrible time.

Dennis called me that night and asked if we could extend our trip next weekend to include a plane flight to Oregon to go to a Bluegrass Festival and see Kris Kristoferson. He twisted my arm :P. This man really knows how to take a woman out on a date!

Kids and I head up hwy 1, next morning. First stop was Cambria, where we had the best breakfast ever at Linn's. God I love that restaurant. It was sort of drizzling so we made a pit stop at the drug store for umbrellas. I bought a pair of incredibly ugly and yet totally wonderful blue rubber shoes. Kids were going eeeuuu mom, they are gross. I had to buy them after that! Cambria is such a cute little town. I wish we had time to shop, but the road beckoned.

We drove to the elephant seal reserve, a couple of miles north of Hearsts Castle. What amazing animals!! They look like massive brown slugs with fins and whiskers. However, when they hit the water, they turn graceful and sleek. We took a lot of photos, so will post here when I get them developed.

We left the seals and headed toward Big Sur. I've traveled that road many times, but always in summer. I have to say, I have never seen it so beautiful as it was this trip. The waves were gigantic, clouds, drifting over the cliffs, colors vibrant, air clear and cold. It seemed unreal, like something out of LOTR or a Disney movie. Took lots of photos there too.

We drove through Monterey, then got lost in Santa Cruz. Angela said, "Oh, take that road." I did and it turned out to be HWY 9, which meandered for about 60 miles through a fairy tale red wood forest and across high crests that overlooked rolling hills. The sun broke through the clouds, and it was just glorious. We eventually found the 280 and arrived in San Francisco. We were all starving so we went to Fisherman's Wharf and stuff ourselves again with massive quantities of fish. Maybe we were all elephant seals in a past life.

Joe did remarkably well, given he hates traveling and missed the cats. Dinner was difficult for him that night, so we decided to leave Thursday instead of Friday. The kids wanted to go to Haight, so I told Joe I'd take him to see the elk in Point Reyes when he was better. I am so proud of him.

We drove to Haight Thursday morning and had breakfast at our usual All You Knead restaurant, and as always it was delicious and way too much food. Joe ordered a pizza, but could only finish a couple of slices, so we boxed the rest.

We all wanted to go to Ameoba record store, so we set out to walk down Haight. Joe wasn't doing well. San Francisco is too chaotic and strange for him. He gets phobic about homeless people, is afraid they will attack us. He basically had enough. We walked by a homeless man who asked for spare change. Joe gave him his pizza. The man was very grateful and Joe felt good. He faced his fear with generosity. Amoeba was fun, but the kids yelled at me cause I was buying all this blue grass stuff. I just want to know, who is the parent here? Huh? Huh?

Anyways, after the record store, Joe was pretty much done. I left Angela to hang with Michale and Danielle--Michael brought his car so we could caravan. Joe and I hit the road home. Poor Joe had to listen to Peter Rowan and Peter Paul and Mary, and me singing--loud for 400 miles.

We got home exhausted but in one piece. Joe went to sleep, but then surprise! Tracy and Wiley came over. We haven't seen Wiley for ages and Joe loves him, so I woke him and the kids went to the market. Angela, Danielle, and Michael got home around 2 AM. Dennis called and we had a nice long talk. I fell asleep listening to my glorious children laughing, including Joe.

Bon Jovi's Living on the Prayer was playing when we drove lost through the Redwoods. Will end with it.

We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

Whooah, we're half way there
Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
Livin' on a prayer
