Ondine She's got everything she needs, She's an artist, she don't look back. She's got everything she needs, She's an artist, she don't look back. She can take the dark out of the nighttime And paint the daytime black. --Bob Dylan 2006-02-01 5:09 PM Why I like poetry Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (2) |
Poetry is the black hole of writing. It's emotion and thought distilled to a point of infinite density, with a gravitational pull that will suck me into it's core. It's a drug, zapping my brain with hits of romance, angst, humor, fear, outrage, lust, envy, joy, nobility--a quick fix of feeling. A good poem is a novel in a few verses. Beginning, middle, end, character arc. I am a different person at the last line than I was at the first. Poetry makes me a better novel writer. It disciplines my thoughts, compresses, simplifies. What's important, what isn't. I like the word, poem. It's simple, small, but beautiful. I am a poet. |
