Medieval Times

On this past Saturday we joined our neighbors (with all 7 kids between the three families) in attending a performance at the dinner theater Medieval Times in Schaumburg IL. There are several others of these shows around the country, but this one was about an hour and 15 minutes from our houses, and it sounded like fun.

It was. My sons both are still talking about the Green Knight, and why didn't he win the competition? They have a fun little story going of treachery in the medieval kingdom of King Alfonso. The king's brother has died while on a crusade (the Crusades? Not sure...) and the line of succession is broken. So knights of the realm are called to contest for the honor of becoming next in line to the throne. One of the knights is in love with the King's daughter and she with him. One of the knights is the "best" of the bunch and very arrogant. Then there is the old wizard who foresees betrayal and treachery by one of the knights.

Each section of the theater is color coded with lights and the crowns that they are given. We were in the green section, and our champion was the Gren Knight. He was cool. He was the second to last one to be bested on the field of honor.

The food was good, if messy. No utensils. Just had to pull apart the roasted chicken with your fingers. The other stuff was easier to eat, stuff like ribs and grilled potato halves and bread and pastries and such.

I had a lot of fun with this place, and so did my kids. It isn't something I'd do every day but maybe in a couple of years we'll do it again.
