Here's what the welcome pack says:

You will be a Finds placement during Weeks 1-2 of the dig, based mostly at Lendal Hill House (about 1 minute walk from the site), the finds processing premises. This placement involves helping the Finds Assistant with finds processing, cataloguing and storage. An element of the work is to help the trainees with basic finds processing and the wet sieving of environmental samples.

The main module teaching week is Monday-Friday; the core teaching hours are 9 am - 5 pm, with a 45-minute lunch break and two shorter breaks. There may be opportunities to help out with demonstrating finds work to the public (and teaching basic finds work to short-term trainees) on site at weekends, but placements are expected to have at least one day off per week!

Outside working hours your time is your own. However there is an evening lecture every Tuesday and a barbeque every Friday, and fortnightly tours of York, which you are welcome to attend. Many site staff and Trainees meet up in a pub other nights of the week, too.

Placements generally assist the site staff with the day-to-day running of the project. An important element will be to help teach the Trainees basic skills, largely by example. Placements will also carry out general tasks necessary for the smooth running of the project (such as setting up for breaks). Hopefully, Placements will learn a great deal about working as part of a team as well as developing their archaeological skills.
