Hammer Coffee

Hammer Coffee logoFolger’s Breakfast Blend is my coffee of choice, but today a dear friend gave me an eight-ounce package of Costa Rican ground coffee from Thomas Hammer. I made a pot this afternoon and the brew was delicious; a tad strong, but now I know to decrease the quantity of grounds for the next time. The Hammer Company is located in Washington State, with most of the stores in the Spokane area. However, their coffee can be ordered online (or via telephone).

The legend of the logo for Hammer Coffee is taken from the ancient discovery of Arabica coffee:

As the legend goes, Kaldi, a goat herder, and his goats first discovered coffee. As Kaldi slept, his goats began eating the coffee cherries which contains the coffee beans and upon awakening, he found his goats happily dancing around the hillside.

I mentioned a similar legend in my article Coffee Grounds; seeing it as the basis for the Hammer logo validates the myth. My version went as follows:

According to one historical account, the effect of coffee beans on behavior was noticed by a sheep herder named Kaldi from Yemeni. As Kaldi tended his herd, he saw the sheep become hyperactive after eating the red "cherries" from a particular plant. He tried a few of the "cherries" himself, and was soon as alert as his herd. The legend also relates that a monk also happened by and chastised Kaldi for "partaking of the devil's fruit."

Anything to do with coffee and the consumption thereof is sure to get my attention in any event...
