My husband and I went off the deep end this morning and had McDonald’s grub for breakfast. I could feel my arteries hardening under the onslaught of two sausage biscuits and a side order of hash browns. I don’t know what possessed me to eat breakfast in the first place (I don’t normally imbibe), but to add insult to injury I consumed the worst possible type of food: fat-laden biscuits and greasy sausages and potatoes. I allow myself a transgression here and there, but this morning’s breakfast will do me for quite a while.

To make amends, I prepared a healthier-than-usual dinner. My husband brought home a shopping bag full of fresh herbs, zucchini and squash this morning (given to him by a co-worker with an abundance of bounty from her garden), so I put the ingredients to good use. I sliced the zucchini and squash and sautéed the pieces in a bit of olive oil. Next I roughly chopped fresh basil, parsley, rosemary and coriander, adding them to the vegetables along with button mushrooms, sliced black olives, a can of whole tomatoes and chopped onion. I boiled egg noodles just short of al dente, and after draining tossed the pasta with the vegetables and herbs. I topped off the dish with sprinkles of Romano cheese, salt and pepper.

By dinnertime I was ready for a healthy meal; whenever I consume greasy junk food I feel sluggish shortly afterwards. Nausea often accompanies the drag-tail effect. Each time I go off the deep end and eat grease-ridden food I regret it for days. But with the pasta and vegetables, my normal sense of self has been partially restored.
