Last night I decided to prepare my husband a home-cooked meal, and as usual he was dumfounded and fervently grateful. I found a nice pair of pork steaks at Safeway, and when it came time I simmered the meat with olive oil, sliced onion, garlic, mushrooms and teriyaki sauce. I prefer slow-cooking pork steaks because they seem to turn out tough otherwise, so I let the meat simmer for about an hour-and-a-half in my electric skillet.

In the meantime, I steamed fresh broccoli and made my version of parsley potatoes (red spuds quartered and cooked in the microwave, and then sprinkled with butter and dried parsley). As a dessert of sorts, I sliced red delicious apples and placed them on a plate with thin slivers of cheddar cheese.

My husband loved the meal, but was none-too-thrilled with the dessert. I have to keep reminding myself of his Hispanic heritage; that dessert in his house growing up mainly consisted of sweets (caramel, cakes, and cookies). I’ve always preferred “savory sweets” (slight sweet mixed with savory or salt), which is something I was also raised with. Oh well, he liked the main meal and this left more cheese and apple for me.
