Coins for a worthy cause?
A cent or two to drop
so the kid wouldn't nag?

Have you got a smile to spare?
Joy to turn the frown?
A crease of the lips
to lift this mask I wear?

Have you got a tune to hum?
Notes for a happy song?
A melody to play
to soothe, to calm?

I ask of you these things because
I seem to have lost my own.
I know that I had these things once
before I mistook gold for dross.
