2008-01-10 11:00 PM Salt and Light Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (1) In a world of darkness, gloworms lure prey with light, and there is not a drop to drink in the salty sea for the castaway.
In the face of a God that demands absolute obedience, half measures just do not cut it. Yet absolutes do not go down well with minds fed with the fluffiness of relativism. To give an answer, to speak the truth with love (Eph 4:15). To some it is speaking the truth that is hard, not wanting to bring hurt to those they love. Others speak the truth roughshod over the God-given minds of others. Minds that can discern, that bear the image of their Creator, however far that image has fallen. We are not fishing for moths in the dark, nor are we to stay comfortable in our Dead Seas, separate from life. The world throngs on the highway of the latest fashions, the boulevard of tomorrow's dreams. There is another path, one unlit by the glittering neon of health, wealth and happiness. As we walk on that humble path, let us shed that light of faith, contentment and confident joy. Let us not pool in sterile lakes. Grains of salt are far more valuable for seasoning than brackish water. We are to keep rot, not people away. It is difficult, inhumanly difficult to lead an upright life. That is why such a life must be supernatural. Right? Wrong? Should we be utilitarian or hold to rigid moralism? What can be right in a world where nothing is really wrong? Who should we trust if we can only really trust ourselves? (Even then, not really). What responsibility do we hold if society determines so much what we do? It's right if it looks good/feels right? "The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7 "This is what the LORD says: 'Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the LORD." Jeremiah 9:23-24 Where should we stand then? In simple-minded, blind faith? Do we shut our eyes and ears to the opinions of others? Or trust that God is the least bad alternative even if other opinions are equally valid? That there are no eternal consequences even if we're wrong that He exists? What do we do in the maelstrom of seemingly flawless logical arguments so passionately advocated against faith? Where do we depart from the confused morality of this world and where do we affirm the imprint of a just God in fallen man? "Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them." Romans 2:14-16 "Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength." 1 Corinthians 1:20-25 "Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away." 1 Corinthians 13:8 Shall we then go on a quest for this mysterious "love that never fails"? Where can we find it? Who has it? What does it look like? How do we know we have finally got it? It is an enormous claim - to "never fail". God, if that is truly who he is, has a lot to live up to. Good news is, he's done it forever. Question is, do we believe he'll do it for us? Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
