...and that

Alan Watts, on page 156 of his 1966 The Book On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, quotes a Chinese Zen master:

"Nothing is left to you at this moment but to have a good laugh!"

On page 159, Watts writes, "In looking out upon the world, we forget that the world is looking at itself--through our eyes and IT's."

Of "IT's," Watts uses James Broughton's words:

"This is It
and I am It
and You are It
and so is That
and He is It
and She is It
and It is It
and That is That."

I have an uncle who ends most sentences with the unusual filler "and that." It makes the circle of family who have noticed it smile. I know he just says it because the couple of guys he works with who remind me of the Car Talk guys say it. When I silently fill space with thoughts of That or It, which I do when I pray, I think of uncle John, I think of It being It and That being That, and my lips pierce a smile and God laughs with me.

...and that.
