Strip club tax ill-advised

Apropos of Gov. Perry’s plan to partially pay for revising school funding via a $5.00 tax on patrons of “Gentleman’s Clubs”, here’s a letter to the Editor in the Austin American-Statesman, Sunday, April 18, 2004 (link expires 4/24/04):

The young women who work at strip clubs will now be using their bodies to pay for our children's education. Isn't there something wrong with this? I imagine the very same women lack an education, but who cares? We will use their bodies to lure in more money to pay for our schools. Why not legalize prostitution and receive even more tax money?

The State of Texas is sending the wrong message to young women by doing this.

I guess every little town will now open up a strip club to increase revenues for their local schools. That is a real inspiring vocation for young women to follow. I only hope it does not become part of the vocational program for the local schools.
