Post 9/11, when Congress was planning to pass the US Patriot Act, some folks warned that this was setting a precedent, that there were legitimate concerns - that this would expand to other aspects of law enforcement.

Naturally in those days of 90% Bush approval ratings, these people were dismissed as cranks.

Turns out they were right to be alarmed.
