Blue Feather It's all about Illusions 110245 Curiosities served |
2006-06-11 12:46 AM Top Eleven Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (4) My husband has inspired me to make my own Top Ten lists, but I prefer lists that go up to eleven. This is the first of several to come.
My most favoritest movies ever. Now, the criteria for this list is not necessarily best acting or best special effects or best writing or any of that shit. But it doesn’t necessarily exclude those criteria either. I’m just saying that I have my own reasons for why these are my favorite movies, and they don’t always have to make sense. Also, I don’t know if it it’s coincidence or criteria, but most of these movies have great soundtracks. 1.Gone With The Wind. This has been my favorite movie for years and years. It was one of my hobbies in high school, and my bedroom wall was full of pictures of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. I remember reading the book while on vacation in Florida at my grandparents’. They’re both gone now, but I have the memory of discovering the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel while laying by the pool. (And the book has remained at my bedside ever since.) I taped the movie off TBS, until I got a two-tape set for Christmas one year. I have books and snow globes and wood carvings and posters, and Rhett and Scarlett even adorned our Wedding Pie. I obviously have a long history with this movie, so it gets the Number One spot. Favorite song: Scarlett Preparing for the Barbeque Favorite scene: Twelve Oaks Favorite quote: “Kathleen? Who’s that man looking at us and smiling? The nasty dark one?” 2. Harold & Maude (see previous blog entry) My uncle introduced me to this movie; it’s one of his favorites. It’s full of dark humor and is where I got a lot of my personal philosophies from (in conjunction with Illusions). I think I surprised Peat with this one; it was not what he expected at all. Where else can you see a 79-year old woman steal a police motorcycle? Favorite song: If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out Favorite scene: the scene with the police officer Favorite quote: “A lot of people enjoy being dead. But they are not dead, really. They're just backing away from life. *Reach* out. Take a *chance*. Get *hurt* even. But play as well as you can. Go team, go! Give me an L. Give me an I. Give me a V. Give me an E. L-I-V-E. LIVE! Otherwise, you got nothing to talk about in the locker room.” 3. The Princess Bride I could quote this entire movie to you, as I’m sure you can, too. Also based on a wonderful book. No matter where I am, no matter what my mood, no matter what scene it is, I can watch this movie and be happy. Favorite song: Storybook Bride (the theme song) Favorite scene: Inigo and the Man in Black Favorite quote: “How’s the sickie?” 4. Lord of the Rings (it’s a tie between Fellowship and Return of the King) No matter how many times I see Aragorn kneeling in front of the hobbits or Bilbo and Frodo at the Grey Havens, I always cry. Always. Peter Jackson did a breathtaking job. Sure, I have a few criticisms and some decisions he made stick in my craw, but overall a spellbinding trilogy. (note: we walked into our wedding reception to the opening strains of The Bridge of Khazad-dum.) Favorite song: The Shire Favorite scene: the cleansing of Orthanc Favorite quote: “He’s a Baggins! Not some blockheaded Bracegirdle from Hardbottle!” 5. It Happened One Night This ties in with my love of Clark Gable. But it’s also a hilarious movie, and the basis for so many other great scenes and characters. Incidentally, I read somewhere that Clark Gable munching on a carrot in the hitchhiking scene was the inspiration for Bugs Bunny’s habit of talking with his mouth full. Favorite song: Young People In Loooooove Favorite scene: the morning in the motorlodge Favorite quote: “What a racket!” 6. Silent Movie My favorite Mel Brooks film. Like Princess Bride, I can watch this movie anytime. It has one spoken line in the entire thing, and it’s uttered by Marcel Marceau. Big stars, big laughs, and Marty Feldman. Jew Heaven. Favorite song: Silent Movie March (theme) Favorite scene: Ba-ba-loo Favorite quote: N/A 7. A Hard Day’s Night My other obsession in high school besides GWTW was The Beatles. Books, toys, posters, pictures, videos, you name it, I had it. I got their entire catalog for my Sweet 16, and I would spend my time making mix tapes of only those CDs. I know more trivia than a girl born 6 years after their break-up should. But besides being my passion, they also made a damn funny movie. Sure, it was a marketing ploy similar to Spice World and all of Elvis’s movies, but the Fab Four were witty, engaging and easy on the eyes. Oh, and pretty good musicians, too. Favorite song: A Hard Day’s Night Favorite scene: George’s big scene Favorite quote: “I now declare this bridge open!” 8. The Breakfast Club The quintessential teen-angst movie. Also eminently quotable. And truer than true. It hit me hard when I first saw it in 7th grade. It still hits me hard. Favorite song: Don’t You Forget About Me (duh) Favorite scene: anytime Vernon is there Favorite quote: “Could you describe the ruckus, sir?” 9. Clerks The quintessential twenty-something-angst movie. Another that’s eminently quotable. And funny as fuck. I didn’t appreciate it the first time I saw it. It took about 2 hours for it all to sink in, and when it did, I laughed my ass off and had to see it again. Favorite song: Can’t Even Tell Favorite scene: Jay and Silent Bob dancing Favorite quote: “Bunch of savages in this town.” 10. The Muppet Movie I love the Muppets. Love them. Favorite song: Can You Picture That? Favorite scene: Kermit and Fozzie in a Studebaker Favorite quote: “Der flim is okee-dokee.” 11. LA Story Clever social commentary, enemas, and Shakespeare quotes. Favorite song: I’ve Had My Moments Favorite scene: Patrick Stewart Favorite quote: “Big S, small A, small N, big D, small E, big E. With a star.” Runners-up These are favorites, but not ultimate favorites. Blazing Saddles Favorite song: Blazing Saddles theme Favorite scene: I’m So Tired Favorite quote: “You Teutonic twat!” Pulp Fiction Favorite song: Son of a Preacher Man Favorite scene: before the dance contest at Jackrabbit Slims Favorite quote: “Oh, man, I just shot Marvin in the face!” South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut Favorite song: What Would Brian Boitano Do? Favorite scene: Cartman’s v-chip going berserk Favorite quote: “Fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck!” O Brother, Where Art Thou? Favorite song: Man of Constant Sorrow Favorite scene: the Wharvey gals Favorite quote: “That don’t make no sense!” Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Favorite song: Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend Favorite scene: having cocktails with the tiara Favorite quote: “I can be smart when it’s important.” More runners-up These are also among my favorite movies, but it was much harder to narrow down a single quote or scene Monty Python and the Holy Grail This Is Spinal Tap Clueless Groundhog Day The Professional (Leon) Shakespeare in Love The Sweetest Thing Goodfellas Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon The Empire Strikes Back Whew! I like a lot of movies! Read/Post Comments (4) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
