Plain Banter
. . . lies about science fiction, and everything else.

When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer

My cave paintings

I'm working from home today. I live in North Carolina, which, contrary to what northerners may think, actually does get snow. I understand why northerners don't believe NC gets snow (youse guys are down south, right?) but apparently the local government in NC doesn't believe it either. Or, rather they choose not to acknowledge the possibility, as that would require them to buy snow removal equipment and be prepared. But we don't do that here, and oh, what a surprise when we get a few flakes. The drivers here don't see it often enough to learn to drive in the stuff, so an inch of snow, something to be laughed at by northerners, is enough to shut the schools and make plugged-in types like me stay home.

I have mixed feelings about the "working from home" thing. The company I work for gives folks like me a laptop computer and a cell phone so we can be reached and made to work any time, anywhere. There is no such thing as a sick day or a snow day for the laptop crowd -- just "working from home" days. I don't know if this is such a great development. Sometimes I wonder if the cavemen might have had it a bit easier than today's electronic warriors -- they only had to go out on the hunt once or twice a week, then hang out at the cave the rest of the time feasting off their kills.

Are these blog entries my cave paintings?
