Plain Banter
. . . lies about science fiction, and everything else.

When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer

I'm a novelist, and I didn't even know it!

I received an interesting email yesterday:

==============================
To: Brian_Plante@sff.net
From: [names withheld to protect the guilty]
Subject: Your books would be great for our stores
Date Sent: Tue, 24 Aug 2004 14:13:33

I've spent quite a bit of time reviewing your books and they made a great impression on me. I'd like to sell them through our stores. We work hand-in-hand with the largest retailers in the country plus thousands of specialty stores and mail-order catalog companies. If you're ready to expand your business and sell your books through the best stores in the U.S., we're ready to help you at [his website].

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
[Some idiot spammer]

What books of mine was he reviewing with great interest, I wonder? I've never written one that I know of, no less sold one. I suspect a lot of writers probably got this. Those of them that actually have published books may be flattered that our friendly spammer seems to have taken an interest in their books. I'm almost tempted to reply to learn more about this particular scam, but then I'd let him know he had an actual, working email address with a live person at the other end, and I'd get even more spam.
