2009-01-27 2:32 PM Serious Geekatude Serious Geekatude - Alright, geek warning: If you are not a computer person, please have a nice day, see you in the next journal post.
I've been living for years now by keeping my files on external USB devices, because I couldn't really keep them on my computer. Why is that you ask? One--my laptop was too small, Two--I was keeping all my personal files off my work computers. Today my friend Bert managed to recover some of the files from my (first) *FAILED* external USB drive. Yippee!! Now, my issue is that I *MUST* come up with a new good habit for my computing needs. Because (a) I never want to suffer another failed drive [and computers fail], and (b) clearly my current backup habits were not sufficient since I actually lost files. [And by the way, although I would love to use Carbonite.com, they don't support doing backups from USB external drives. So I would *have* to have my files on a "real computer" to use that service.] My old laptop I bought in 2001, a Dell Inspiron, but it was right before the Pentium chips came out. So I'm limited to an 800MB Celeron processors, a 10Gig drive, and Windows 2000 -- which actually works wonderfully, for what it is. But I was doing a regular "every few years wipe the drive and start over" process, when I couldn't get the wireless to talk to the router and/or modem anymore... and that's where I got stuck, and haven't taken the time to revisit the problem. And since then, I actually had to replace BOTH the modem with the cable company AND the wireless router (long story), so I really should try the laptop again. Maybe it would communicate again. But with a 10 gig laptop, you can see why I just lived on my 40 then 60 gig USB drives, then bought the 3rd drive much later --> and that's how I ended up with a 160 GB drive as "just another external backup drive" because they just keep getting bigger and cheaper every time I turn around. Two friends now have recommended a Network-attached storage (NAS) drive. I'll just start looking into what fits my budget and computer needs. My biggest problem is not HAVING a working computer at home right now. Theresa (Mariam) gave me her old desktop which I haven't done anything with yet, because I was in the middle of working on the laptop when she replaced her desktop and sent me her old one. At the same time, my TV died. When I replaced the television, the only ones out there were nice flat-screens, and the one I bought has USB connections to act as a monitor. So taking Theresa's old desktop only made sense after I bought the flatscreen, because the computer was "free, no monitor no keyboard no mouse"... so all I have to do is decide on an OS and get a keyboard. I'm tempted to learn Ubuntu or something like that, to get either or both the laptop and/or desktop at home working again. Am I insane? The only copy of Windows I own is Windows 2000 from the laptop purchase, and so I'm not sure what I'll do at home. There. And now, discuss. * * * * * Today's Blessing That I'm Thankful For: Bert, who rocksors my socksors Read/Post Comments (3) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
