We are safe

I left work on Friday at 11. It started snowing a little after noon. Very lightly. When it finished the first time, in Washington DC proper we had 20 to 21 inches. The official measurement is taken at the airport in Virginia-they measured 17 inches. Today is Wednesday. It is now blizzard weather. The wind and snow are making visability nil. This is what I grew up with every few years in Massachusettes-remember those winters Teri-when we went to school well into June? The year I graduated was one of them!

The newspaper delivery has been sporadic to say the least; but it is funny to read editorials where mothers are complaining that they don't know how to keep their children entertained; I feel like yelling, how do they think that our forefathers kept children entertained for days on end. Send the kids out, let them play for an hour or so, bring them in, feed them, dry them, let them watch a movie (which we didn't have) dry their clothes, rinse, lather and repeat!

I have finished the 2nd baby's blanket. I have started a shawl that I thought was going to be for me, but it is not-a friend has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The colors are ones she wears. No wonder it didn't quite feel 'right' for me.

I did make a quick run to the grocercy/pharmacy yesterday to pick up scripts and some small grocery items-bread, fresh vegetables-not much on the shelf, got eggplant and asparagus and the last loaf of bread! There where no onions or potatoes or tomatoes or cucumbers available. There was milk, but not what I needed.

My apartment building did a great job of shoveling all around the building-and walkway to the street, I can't say the same for other apartments, landlords. I took a cane with me for balancing, and a back pack. DC charges 5cents per bag if you don't bring your own. I used the cane into deeper snow where the shoveling was less than ideal. Or if there was ice where I had to walk, it gave me a 'ice pick' into snow for balance. Really wish I had a true walking stick.

The roads around our building may have been plowed once since the last storm. None during this one. DC is not prepared for this. The metro is basicly done, anything above ground is stopped, buses stopped, even snow plowing has had to halt because of the blowing snow. National guard has been called in. People are walking in the street.

Do not ask me where the homeless are. There are alot of homeless in DC.

Good thing about being at home this much-found a new show on tv CATS 101. Since I want a cat, we have been watching it. Just caught a new cat called the 'Bombay'. Solid black with copper eyes, acts like a dog, likes to walk on harness leash, and cuddles-sounds like the cat for me.
